Wisdom/Unconditional Love:
Civilized Ways of Control?

Somewhere in the Holy Book it is said that wisdom is 'fearing god.'

Biologically, fear is not 'bad', it helps us to heed dangers, to be in control for the purpose of protecting ourselves. So here fear could be considered as a faculty of the will to live. However there is also another form of fear that originates not from our biological make-up, that is instincts, but from our mind. It takes shape as the result of our genetic, familial, social and cultural conditionings and programming. The impulse for the biological form of fear is feeling (originating from instinct) and that for the second or mental form is emotion (originating from mind).

Now in order to illustrate this point, let us look at an example. A person who suddenly is confronted with a real danger, for example a car accident, experiences a biological instinctive form of fear, but the fear that an adult experiences when entering a dark room that is safe as much as all the rooms of our homes are safe at nights arises from the mind or a memory of a past 'painful' experience. The original feeling of fear after being registered by the memory is transformed to emotion of fear. Whenever this memory is stimulated it would arose the emotion of fear. While in the first case, all healthy normal individuals will be frightened whether there has been any memory of a past accident or not. Here even if there is any memory of a similar experience it may even help to reduce fear. The first experience of any truly (meaning biologically) fearful situation if does not lead to death, would tell us that the situation is survivable. That is how we overcome many of our original fears originating from our ignorance.

Now no matter in what form, fear may in any case bring about more caution and a greater tendency to be more protective and in control. In this way it may decrease the probability of facing possible outer dangers. That is why and how fear can have a survival value.

Wisdom defined as fearing god would be the culmination of discretion. In order to illustrate this point let us first see what may the subcategories of wisdom be.

The first thing that comes to mind is reason (with its own subcategory of logic), intelligence and consciousness. But as every intelligent or rationalist or conscious individual is not necessarily wise as well, and there are wise individuals who are not considered intelligent, rationalist or conscious at least according to the prevalent conceptions of these concepts, there should also be something else involved here as well. Where does the wisdom of a villager come from? The most tangible answer is: from life experience and (conscious or unconscious) observation of Nature. So no matter what the means of attainment of wisdom may be, we can consider it as the complementary form of ignorance. Ignorance can lead us to many dangerous situations. And there is no end to our human ignorance, 'the more we know, the more we realize how much we don't know!' With wisdom we can control our ignorance (including inexperience). In order to illustrate this point, let us first remember that fear and particularly the mental form is the result of ignorance? Now when we accept our ignorance as a fact and start to feel and acknowledge this feeling that there is something greater behind all this apparent puppet show, there is a greater consciousness planning it all, then we sort of put our swords down and surrender. It is foolish to fight with an 'opponent' that one knows that is more powerful, more everything in fact. This is the dictum of survival. In this way, we don't let it endanger our lives even more, depending on how wise we are.

The popular saying, 'there is a wisdom in any 'accident' that happens to us', gives us the strength to see the situation from a wider perspective. So instead of allowing fear seize us, we canalize the energy that could be wasted through taking any action out of fear (unless it is truly biological), to exploration of this perspective. What a magical soothing effect, positive attitudes may immediately produce! Suppose you face an accident that you think can bring about tragic results, as soon as you are over the stage of shock, if you are a spiritually oriented person you remind yourself of the concept that one way of expressing it is 'god is great' and if you are a scientifically oriented individual you remind yourself that 'intelligence, knowledge and experience will help me to solve it.' Such a self-assurance helps you to see a 'saving' power no matter where the source is located or where it comes from. The feeling of power is one of the most efficient antidotes of fear. So does the statement 'wisdom is fearing god' implies.

We crave for wisdom because it brings about peace of mind. The higher the degree of our wisdom, the lower is the degree of our non-biological fears. The less fear we have, the less worried we will be, and the more peace of mind we would have. In other words, we would be more 'in-control.' It is the highest and most human form of control. And the most beautiful point about it is that it is Conscious that is Human Wisdom. Aren't we the only creatures on earth that supposedly should possess 'conscious awareness'? and not the 'unconscious' form of other animals that sometimes can far more exceeds ours? The same may be said about - at least the prevalent present conception of Unconditional Love, that very love that is preached these days in so many tongues and perhaps in an extraordinarily unprecedented extent as one of the highest goals of life -if not THE highest.

Who is Roya Monajem?

Like every body else as a soul in search of herself she studied medicine to learn about human body and psyche for six years, then studied, worked, wrote articles and carried out research on acupuncture therapy and Iranian herbal medicine for years. A few of her researches were published in American Journal of Acupuncture.

Meanwhile translating and publishing over dozens of books that she found helpful in her own search for a "theory of health and disease" in the field of medicine, psychology, mythology, philosophy, occult and also a few novels.

Participated in producing a TV serial on "man in search of equilibrium" that was banned, although it won a prize in a documentary film festival (Roshd) in Iran.

She started to realize that with demystification of mysteries, the age for certain relationships such as "master-disciple" is over. Now the whole world is like a temple and one's relationships is one's best spiritual master in "knowing oneself." So she started to look for a world-view that could make one independent of the need to have a spiritual guide or master in the traditional sense of the word, and the results of this search was presented in her book Womanhood-Motherhood (http:/irannet.com/books/womanhood-) and presented workshops on the subject for about five years. She worked as a freelance translator for Payvand.com for a year or so and now has a Roya's Corner at the same site (www.payvand.com/news/Roya's Corner, where she publishes pieces on what she considers to be the major concepts of life.

She has been constantly casting away her overused old limiting selves, and acting as these dead selves' mortician and grave digger as far as she remembers, as any kind of self-identity stimulates the fear of loneliness and insecurity and thus lowering the power and inclination to love "selflessly."

Since her high school years in England she has been reciting Robert Frost's little poem:

I am nobody,

Who are you?

Are you nobody too?

Then that makes a pair of us!
