By: Harold Sequeira yogaschoolonline@gmail.com Ubhe sukrtduskrte Tasmad yogaya yujyasva Yogah karmasu kaussalam (Gita 2.50) Translation of verse: ?One who has yoked his intelligence (with the Divine), (or is established in his intelligence) casts away even here, both good and evil. Therefore strive for Yoga, Yoga is skill in action? (from Lectures of Dr. Jayadeva, on the Gita) If the Buddhi is murky, actions do not come out well, and one cannot apply skill to action. Then?ego limitations decrease, and the energy blocked by the ego is released and one can gain greater skill in action. Thus the ego held in abeyance, is the second factor referred to in this verse. Buddhi is yoked to the Lord?s service. Each aspect of our personality has its limitations. The ears can hear so far and no further. The eyes can detect up to a certain distance, even with a 20=20 vision. It is the Buddhi, that helps us to transcend sensory, mental and ego limitations. The liberated Buddhi sees everything, as if it were on a canvas, the past, present and future. Seeing the permutations and combinations of the forces at work, the Yogi with a clarified Buddhi, which he has surrendered to God[1], acts. His skills are enhanced. This God centered and Self centered Yogi gains skill in action. He requests God to be his partner (albeit silently) and this helps him to be attentive to detail, mentally plan, physically act, with skill. There is nothing of greater and smaller value for him, everything is done with devotion, as an offering to God. Naturally, he gains skill in action, not only the visible scale, but also internally, in body, mind and soul. Earlier having gained a state of equipoise or equilibrium on equanimity[1], the Yogi does not divide the world in good and bad. This is not indifference and ingenuity, but a vision that helps him to see everything in a new light. Thus no energy is wasted in criticism, but a tranquil acceptance of life in its multifarious forms. The yogi is not a drop out, he should be ready for action, action with skill, when need be, as Shri Krishna enthuses Arjuna to do this on the battlefield. (Notes by Promil) H.
