By: Harold Sequeira promhari@yahoo.com PERSONALITY TYPES:The Sattvic, Rajasic and Tamasic types The Gunas, the driving force behind our thoughts, words and deeds, in fact formulate our personality, states the Gita. The idea of the Gunas (constituents of matter) is fundamental in Indian philosophy. The minds in ancient India dwelt as much on the physical aspect of the Universe as the psychic and spiritual aspects. They found that the multidimensional universe is held together with strand-like substances (albeit extremely subtle). Thus, one of the meanings of the word Guna is strands [1]. They (Gunas ? Sattva, rajas and tamas) are the three primordial forces through which Prakrti or nature creates all objects and products in the universe. According to our tendencies and lifestyle, one guna predominates in each individual. Thus we each have what might be referred to as a Sattvic, Rajasic or Tamasic personality. ? In Action: The Sattvic person (as if) forgets the self, whilst in the midst of activity; the Rajasic person predominately projects the self, while the Tamasic one may simply behave compulsively. The tamasic personality generally is blocked (in the atom, tamas represents the inert nucleus and therefore has more tendency of blocking) and therefore the tamasic person is likely to function from old patterns. ? Gunas and the will power : The Sattvic personality almost always projects the same nature, while the Rajasic personality works on what might be called ?self security?. They project, inspect and calculate all the time, and thus get a distorted knowledge from various life situations. The Tamasic personality, stuck in a groove, with torpor engulfing all the atoms of the body, as it were, is unlikely to move or be moved. ?For him? Sri Krishna adds, ?decision making is difficult. Anything small is exaggerated in his mind and takes on the dimension of imminent drowning in some catastrophe and, accordingly, such a mind is incapable of decisive action, when it is due?. ? Gunas and desires: The Sattvic mind forgets the self; the Rajasic mind starts and stops with ?I? and ?mine?; the Tamasic mind displays sadistic tendencies. ? Gunas and emotions: ?peace? is the primary concern of the Sattvic mind; while anger drives the emotions of the Rajasic mind; and the Tamasic mind will tend towards hurting others. ? Gunas and the intellect: Sattvic is reflective; rajasic is analytical and tamasic is ?blank?, but obfuscates?that is, this type of personality being in a stupefied state tends to function mostly with confused judgment, and gets bewildered easily. ? Gunas and Tapas(effort) : Attending to what is at hand is the likely mode of the Sattvic personality, always duty bound and following dharma; whereas, the Rajasic personality, being oriented to results, is extroverted (confusing adventurism with duty). The tamasic personality bemoans its own ?failure?, in life. ? Gunas and self study: Understanding ?Reality? seems to be the prime orientation of the Sattvic personality; while the ego-driven Rajasic personality constantly tries to calibrate renunciation: ? ?no expectations? for the sattvic mind; ? ?what benefits will I get? for the Rajasic one, when dealing with this theme; and ? the Tamasic mind seeks relief from problems?thoughts of renunciation will not occur. ? Gunas and Isvara: ?I bow down to your superior will, o God and surrender myself totally in hour hands? will be the constant prayer of the Sattvic mind; ?what privileges will I get, if I go close to Isvara? is the motivational drive of the Rajasic mind when thinking of God and mind in a subtle way (for a one-upmanship later); while the tamasic mind is inert and without higher aspirations. ? Gunas and Tamasic mind: these personality types will leave the responsibility of looking after themselves to God, in order to avoid working! ? Gunas and Bhakti: the Sattvic mind will think of the universal weal and welfare; the Rajasic mind will form autocratic sects, and the tamasic mind will have a very crude form of devotion. The Gunas drive our personality; thus in the Gita it is indicated that we formulate ways and means of improving our personality and attempt to achieve the sattvic mind, by sublimating our base and egoistic tendencies.
