The Language of Signs

"Violets" are the signs of the coming Spring, so are swallow, thus we were told when we were children. When green seedless grapes develop black spots it means pigeons are coming. When the tree leaves start to change their green robes with colorful ones, it implies that Autumn is coming or when the sun starts to shine vertically, it is a sign that Summer is on the way.

Without these signs and paying attention to them, living creatures would not know when to start activity, when to slow it done and when to stop it with the first cold breeze of Winter. It is such an adjustment or harmony that keeps the breath of life alive on our beautiful planet, Earth.

Years ago, in the midst of a life crisis and depression and suffering from a bad flu, I requested a friend of the opposite sex to drive me through country roads. After a few hours of driving we stopped to drink a cup of tea. By then darkness had engulfed the earth. We set off again. About ten minutes later, suddenly the car hood raised and almost fell on the windshield. Immediately an ominous feeling overwhelmed me as though something was telling me Œdon¹t go further.¹ But soon my mind started to re-take its usual control and called my heart superstitious for having such obsolete Œideas¹ in the scientific world of today and so we continued the trip. A couple of hours later, we were stopped by the revolutionary guards, detained for two nights and were tried for Œtraveling non-Islamic-ly¹ (the belief that no simple friendship can exist between opposite sexes) and whipped.

After this incidence which was perhaps the first one in my life that I closely observed the whole process of its life-cycle, it was quite natural to start being skeptical about the judgment of my scientific mind. Who was really superstitious, my mind or my heart?

In my clinical practice I had already come to the conclusion that ŒDiseases can be regarded as Messages of life¹ which I selected as the title of my book on Multiple Sclerosis over a decade ago. This was a year or so before the above incidence which I then took it as a Œsign¹ to delve deeper and explore the subject of Œsigns¹ more seriously. So I read Jung¹s writings and anything else that I could find on the subject. I translated James Redfield¹s Celestine Prophecy hoping to understand the subject better by living with it more than I would if I just had simply read it (that is one of my main purposes in translation: to live with a work, to experience a work, to internalize a work, to devour an idea). Yet I still couldn¹t demystify or decode the language of signs in my life as clearly as this language is decoded in relation to Nature: violets and swallows are signs of the coming of Spring.

How much pain could be avoided, how much luck would be grabbed if we could do the same in our personal life. (That is why I could forgive the whole Islamic jurisdiction for their verdict in relation to my un-Islamic act! The pain of whipping opened a great window even though I still couldn¹t see what is outside this window.) On the other hand, old Iranian astrologers define Œfree will¹ as Œdiscernment of the right timing.¹ In other words, according to this view, or my understanding of this view, we possess only this much of free will, Œto be able to discern the right timing,¹ otherwise we are just a doll in the hands of fate. I remember that when I first read this Œstatement¹ I was going crazy. Is that really all the free will we may have? So little?! Even that is only in our possession if we are able to make that discernment! How the hell am I supposed to do that? It sounded like the secret of life to me, the philosophers¹ stone (or better to say one of the secrets and one of the philosopher¹s stones). For it means: the higher this Œdiscernment of right timing,¹ the greater would be our free will and the less we are dominated by fate. It is like saying that changing seasons is the fate of the earth and discernment of the right time for cultivation of land, harvesting the crop and starting the process of its storage is the only way that we can survive and not only simply survive, but live more happily, feeling less fear and insecurity. No doubt that defining free will as such does not negate the fact that we can act whenever we wish, but it has this hidden presupposition that we don¹t wish to waste our efforts or put ourselves in danger. We like to obtain fruitful productive results for our efforts. So perhaps we can modify the above statement to "although there is no limit to our free will if we are ready to pay the consequences, but the amount of Œconstructive¹ free will we possess is directly proportional to our power in discerning the right timing."

And in order to develop our power of Œdiscernment¹ we need to train our minds in a new way. There is one domain where it has been developed hopefully to the fullest (so now it can start the process of decline like other phenomena of life) and we are conditioned to think and use our minds only within its limits: the domain of discernment of the immemorial dualities of Œgood and bad¹ Œright and wrong.¹ To transcend this domain that is using the highest amount of our energy because of its consequences, it is necessary to change our perspective, which means to teach ourselves to look at the dualities as a continuum, to see for example, darkness not as the opposite of light, but as the least amount of light. When I say I am Œbad¹ and Œwrong¹ the most destructive consequence of such a conclusion is: Nobody loves me. And what are the most prevalent consequences of such a belief? Constant blaming, disliking, hating, feeling self-righteous, condemning, what else do we do? Turning to a Sniper? How much hatred he must be harboring and why?

Words carry energy and thereby posses power. See what a difference it makes in one¹s emotional state when one says, ŒHe kills because he is an Œevil man¹ (please feel the effects) and when one says ŒHe kills because he is so full of hatred, and that is most probably because he has never been even touched by love in his life.¹ (We do have a different feeling in our hearts when we hear such statements, haven¹t we?)

I constantly found myself thinking about that Sniper and sympathizing with all the people living in America and particularly with mothers who I could feel with my flesh and blood what a fearful state they were living in (this is how we have been feeling for the past two decades here in this country that when our kids leave home, we would wonder and worry whether they would come back home safe or would we have to start looking for them in this or that revolutionary committee because they had make-up on, or took a photo of a Œslogan¹ written on the walls of the city orŠ). I was feeling desperate as on one hand, I thought there is nothing that I could do in this respect, and on the other hand, I could not put the whole thing out of my mind. So I started to think about his probable intentions. Why is he doing that? and I reached the conclusion that it is all because he has never been loved.¹ And despite the immense anger and disgust I was feeling in relation to the consequences of his deed, I tried to send him as much love as I could find in myself while hoping that Law would soon be able to see about and deal with these consequences before he finds a chance to shoot another soul. And I was so glad that I could see other colors here except the usual black and white. I don¹t think I am justifying his deed by acting and behaving in this way. I am just trusting him to be of the same nature as all other human beings as science tells me. Once upon a time he was as innocent as all those loving children that he shot for apparently Œno reason¹ except envy, jealousy, hatred andŠ

In the world of relativity and uncertainty, and endless human ignorance, there are times when two times two is not four. It occurs in nature too. Sometimes trees grow blossoms in Autumns as well. So the sign of blossoms alone is not sufficient enough for us to know that Spring is coming. Where are the violets? Where are the swallows? Let us be intelligent enough to keep this in mind as much and as continuously as possible. It is not that easy to learn the Œlanguage of signs.¹

Now one of the ways to develop our ability to decipher the language of signs is to start with those which are like violets and swallows. But for that I need to restrain my mind, to let it only function where and when it is ordained to do so biologically. And for that I need a great deal of energy. The energy is already there only if I don¹t allow it to be consumed by many useless unnecessary mental functions. Here I am in fact trying to cure one of my most disabling diseases that I like to call Œcancer of the mind.¹ Even though we still do not know how to treat most of the cancers, we can stop its further metastasis.

Discernment of the right timing! What does it mean? The time of what? There are two basic domains that we pay most for the consequences of our deeds: (1) the domain of social life (2) the domain of personal life. In both, relationships make the backbone, the framework, the basis of what is going to appear as the result of our efforts. The efforts spent on planting seeds in Spring produces different results from that spent in taking the same action in Autumn (just because some trees have grown blossoms.) In other words, one meaning of the discernment of the right timing in our ordinary everyday life is to discern when to show efforts and when to stay inactive? When to allow ourselves to get involved in a relationship and when we better avoid it?

In the domain of relationships, I would take the following traits in people as Œsigns of warning.¹ ŒYou better watch out! Be more careful! AndŠ"

1) Laziness
2) Any gesture of martyr-ism, poor me
3) Possessiveness,
4) Mean-ness, like a rose that does not allow anybody to smell its scent in one way or another
5) Lacking the spirit of cooperation, participation
6) Idleness
7) Constant complaining and nagging, pessimism, in one word any forms of negativity
8) Refusing to accept responsibility for the quality of one¹s life
9) Barrenness, not producing, creating, showing efforts
10) Not keeping one¹s words in the most simple things as being on time
11) Procrastination
12) Egoistical Selfishness or Selflessness

Although I understand that from the psychological perspective all these traits are developed as the result of some childhood traumas and our cultural, social, religious, familial conditionings, and I acknowledge their presence in me (the main reason for recognizing them outside myself), and although I do not have anything against these individuals yet I prefer to avoid such fearful individuals that need a lot of energy for healing their wounds that I can no longer afford to give. ŒConservation of energy¹ is perhaps the main goal of Œdiscernment of the right timing.¹

Let us remember that we are living under very sensitive, delicate, subtle conditions. It is perhaps the most critical period of human history as now the whole earth is in danger of the consequences of our actions and not just certain parts of it. In order to save it, we need to function at our best and show our best efforts. Throughout the world, all those whose heart beats mainly for the future of this beautiful planet and its inhabitants need to participate and cooperate and hold their hands together as tight as possible to give each other the hope, the energy, the love required for trying our best and to function as fruitfully and creatively as we can.
