Sai Baba of Shirdi
(abbreviation - SBS)
Intensity of devotion, simplicity of life, unassuming personality, service to humanity were the characteristics of this Mystic of Maharashtra.
Not much is known about the life of SBS, before he was 16 years of age. It is stated that he was born close to the town of Shirdi. Man of few words, he did not like to answer questions about the place of his birth, family and so forth. Questions of this type were brusquely set aside.
His style of talk was epigrammatic/brief. When asked about God, he would say "God is Master". He dwelt on this divine presence in his life all the time, somewhat like Kabir (a mystic of unusual stature ? 15th Century A.D. India).
He was ascetic by nature, and would sit hours together in a yogic asana, stoic and unmindful of heat or cold, nuisance of children throwing stones at him, and other difficulties that one would face in a 19th century Indian village. Absorbed in contemplation of the divine, he was disconnected from the outside world during his dhyan.
He was unritualistic in his worship and would participate both in the namaz and aarthi. As a true mystic he could function independently of religion.
MAN OF MIRACLES
Miracles would happen spontaneously in the life of SBS. Curing the incurable, consoling the inconsolable souls in agony, teaching through his presence, and through Satsanghs, even teaching people through their dreams were termed miraculous by the discriminating minds. Moreover there are first person reports of his levitation, bilocation, and his trances - where it was felt that he had gone towards the unfathomable depths.

Sai Baba made eleven assurances to his devotees:
o Whosoever puts their feet on Shirdi soil, their sufferings will come to an end.
o The wretched and miserable will rise to joy and happiness as soon as they climb the steps of My Samadhi .
o I shall be ever active and vigorous even after leaving this earthly body.
o My tomb shall bless and speak to the needs of my devotees.
o I shall be active and vigorous even from my tomb.
o My mortal remains will speak from My tomb.
o I am ever living to help and guide all who come to Me, who surrender to Me and who seek refuge in Me.
o If you look to Me, I look to you.
o If you cast your burden on Me, I shall surely bear it.
o If you seek My advice and help, it shall be given to you at once.
o There shall be no want in the house of My devotee.
SOCIOLOGICAL ASPECTS
In his shrine at Shirdi I saw a multi-religious, multi-cultural mass of humanity of pilgrims for the morning aarthi. For the Muslims he was 'pir' ? divine manifestation; for the Hindus an avatar of Shiva ; for others perhaps a the doppelganger ? the double of Kabir. His marble mausoleum was cordoned off so that none would touch the Samadhi. Suddenly, a woman lifted the cordoned rope and rushed ? in a kind of 'artritic dance' and the poojari scooped a handful of water from the sides of the mausoleum and forcefully splashed the water on the woman's face. And lo and behold the tottering woman straightened, the demonic look on her face became 'shanth'/peaceful.
Miracles happen in strange ways and suddenly. The powers of "The Master" manifest through the mystics spontaneously. Through their life, the mystics point the way towards the Master.
At the entrance of the shrines of SBS it is written ?"Shraddha and Sabri"?.(Have) faith and patience. This was the sum total of his teachings.
