ALDOUS HUXLEY

(A British writer who wrote extensively and interestingly on science, philosophy and mysticism).

Aldous Huxley was a British writer (1894-1963) He was born in a family of brilliant minds. He was a fine essayist. He was an examiner of social mores.

"Through his novels and essays Huxley functioned as an examiner and sometimes critic of social mores, societal norms and ideals, and possible misapplications of science in human life . While his earlier concerns might be called "humanist ," ultimately, he became quite interested in "spiritual" subjects like parapsychology and mystically based philosophy , which he also wrote about. By the end of his life, Huxley was considered, in certain circles, a 'leader of modern thought'."(1)

Genetically he was endowed to follow science from his father's side and literature from his mother's. He was equally drawn to his father's botanical lab as to literary ideas from his mother who was the head of Hillside school. In his late teens an eye disease made him nearly blind, thus he could opt out of compulsory military service during World War I. Recovering his eyesight, he entered Oxford to study English literature.

His initial writings were driven by the intellect but later on they were centered on "feelings". Thus he could write from the head and heart with ease.

A published writer at 17, the lanky and cerebrotonic Huxley soon produced a masterpiece ? "The Brave New World", which almost prophesized de-humanizing through scientific experiments and the dangers involved in the unbridled use of science.

Huxley married Maria Nys in 1921 and their only son Mathew became a epidemiologist later.

"In 1938 Huxley befriended J. Krishnamurti , whose teachings he greatly admired. He also became a Vedantist in the circle of Swami Prabhavananda , and he also introduced Christopher Isherwood to this circle. Not long after, Huxley wrote his book on widely held spiritual values and ideas, The Perennial Philosophy, which discussed teachings of the world's great mystics ".(2)

After the untimely death of his wife, Huxley moved to California, remarried, and became the luminary who guided the nascent Human Potential Movement with a series of workshops at Esalen, Calif. The path breaking Institute's motto was 'liberty, peace, justice, and brotherly love', which pinpoint similar ideas of Yoga philosophy. 2. (Extract from wikepedia.com . Free encyclopedia). HS
