Freedom, Acceptance of Fatality

It is said that caged-birds can not survive outside the cage. If freed, they will either be hunted by another predator or a human bird-hunter. But the English say, Œthere is an exception even in the exception.¹ Accordingly the above either/or should have some exceptions. What may be some of these exceptions for any freed-bird or a human being freed from some invisible cage? (Perhaps the same thing happens to released prisoners too. In any case, they are not the point of concentration of this writing.)
(1) to find a safe place with one or a few Œothers¹ of the same kind;
(2) to find a safe place alone and stay alone;
In this case, further alternatives may be:
(a) to die out of fear or depression resulting from loneliness,
(b) to feel content and joyful because of the restored freedom for the rest of life,
The latter alternative is possible mostly if
(i) if the subject in question manages to live in Here-Now
(ii) or to live with a strong lasting hope of finding a company one day.

We all have experienced such a situation a few times in life. The most universal incidences are:
(1) freedom from our physical dependency on our parents and other grown-ups caring for us (completion of childhood stage),
(2) freedom from the parental controlling authority when leaving home for the first time (to go to college, take a job, travel to another country andŠ)
(3) freedom from an unhappy, suppressive relationship (whether at work or at home);
(4) freedom from sickbed;
(5) freedom from any kind of addiction;
(6) freedom from parental duties, responsibilities;
(7) freedom from an oppressive social political system or the ruling party.

What did we do after experiencing these freedoms?

Not forgetting the exceptions, the majority of us have repeatedly felt in cage again considering some of the following alternatives:
(1) to surrender passively, out of weakness, out of fear of
(a) leaving the safety of known and familiar despite its negative aspects;
(b) falling the prey of an even worse situation again;
with all the known and unknown consequences of such a form of surrender with the common result of Œsuppressed anger¹ that leads to all sorts of sicknesses.
(2) to dare to say ŒNo¹ again and search for solutions.

The ability to say this "No" determines the degree and the intensity of our Will to Freedom. Now the question is whether this "No" always implies Œopposition¹ Œwar¹? It seems that way, doesn¹t it? Even when one reaches the conclusion that the cause of this constant facing Œunhappy¹ Œcage-like¹ situation is a relentless refusal (a determined No) to accept the fact that ŒThis is life!¹ And one starts to surrender or say "Yes" to the apparent Œfact¹ of "this is life!" Or as a Persian poet puts it: You wish to make a better world?/

The world is the world, how would it be otherwise? (Each time that I try to translate verses, I realize what an Œineffective¹ translator I can be. Why did I ever choose it as one of my Œprofessions¹?) Even in this case of total acceptance, there is still that underlying relentless "No" functioning, with the difference that this time, its aim is to stop fighting! The world is the world, how would it be otherwise? What may be the consequence of adoption of such a perspective? The consequence of this conscious and voluntary surrender, this ceasefire, in one word, this break in saying "No"?

Then what a world would that be? What would happen if we stop saying "No" to anything from our own small personal cages to the great cage of Œugliness¹ Œinjustice¹ Œcruelty¹ Œtyranny¹ that we share throughout the world? Hasn¹t this very "No" been and would be the cause of all the beauties that our kind has added and is adding to this world? Buddha said, Œlife is suffering and the cause of suffering is desire, andй

Let¹s replace the word Œdesire¹ with Œignorance.¹ Isn¹t ignorance the cause of our suffering? Don¹t we keep falling into cages because of our ignorance? First because we are ignorant and unaware of the fact that predators can have different appearances. Then we are ignorant that it is really our fears and dependent personality that makes us so prone to falling into cage-like relationships, from personal to social political ones. Then we see the game, the great scenario, the story of Œgod¹ Œdevil¹ andŠThen we wish to say "No" to all of it when there is so much Œugliness¹ Œsuffering and pain¹ in it. Then we remember that according to our dual understanding and conception of life, there should surely be as much Œbeauties¹ Œjoy and bliss¹ too. And life is less than an Œinstance¹ when compared to cosmic Œtimes¹ and Œtime is probably an illusion¹ and we come into this world one day and play a certain scenario on its stage, and we go an Œinstant¹ later and it is not that important to know who has been the scriptwriter, Œgod¹ or Œourselves.¹ After all, as Hafez puts it Œfrom the hand to the mouth, it is not that much¹ and soon whether we like it or not we will be freed from this physical body and so let us keep it healthy and for that we need lots of joy and beauty. So let¹s create it to our utmost power by transcending our fears, ignorance, negligence of the fact that Œfrom hand to mouth, it is not that much.¹
