FIVE PIILARS OF WISDOM
In the Yoga Sutra (1.20) Patanjali outlines the way to wisdom
Faith is first. As children we have faith in our parents. Faith, that they would care for us and protect us. As we grow up we have faith in ourselves. When we reach a point when we can't take care of ourselves, and nobody can help us, we seek God's help Ð this is faith in God. In the case of the Yogi he develops faith in himself, in the method (yoga) he is following, he will also have faith in his Guru (if he has one), and develops faith and trust in life. "Faith sustains the yogi like a loving mother" says sage Vyasa[1] .
Strength is second. Faith can move mountains it is said. The yogi does not try to move mountains but he strives to remove the obstacles on his spiritual path. Sickness, laziness, instability and so forth[2] are overcome, by sustained alertness, so that the yogi's vital energy is not drained. He also works consciously to strengthen his body with abhyasa Ð his daily yoga practices which keep his vital index high. With proper sattvic diet he keeps his energy and strength sedately high.
Mindfulness is third. The yogi recalls the sequence of his sadhana at will and keeps his memory trimmed so that it does not get overloaded with unnecessary things. Daily practices of reflection, or contemplation or meditation keeps his memory sharp. Mindfulness in all his activities, giving the proper attention to all his does, helps him to vitalize his mind and it remains on guard at all times. Through meditation he is gradually able to see the sequence of each thought[3] and he is able to hone his memory sharp. Thus mindfulness and good memory go hand in hand. This is the third pillar of wisdom for the Yogi.
Concentration is the fourth. Yoga outlines five types of Citta (or mind)[4] . When the distractions and the infatuations and obsessions of the mind are overcome, when the vacillations and restlessness is controlled, when the mind is made one-pointed and the mind is arrested at will, the high concentrations of the Yogi lead him to Samadhi, a wisdom bestowing state of Yoga.
Prajna is the fifth. Here the mind made decisive and strong, with good memory and mindfulness, the mind's normal functioning is superseded and an intuitive knowledge dawns on the Yogi. With sustained effort and with God's grace and blessing, all this may finally lead the yogi to enlightenment and Freedom.
Faith, energy, memory or mindfulness, Samadhi and Prajna Ð the five pillars of Yogic wisdom converge and help the yogi attain higher states of Consciousness.
