Awareness of Fatality
(Or the need for the creation of God-Devil)
If we are from this earth with no Adam and Eve as our ancestors, but some lost species of Pro-homo sapiens that when and if discovered would definitely remove any doubt about our origin from the rest of animal kingdom, then we must accept that both god & devil are our own creations. And the source of inspiration for such creation must have been within us. And prophets, saints, gurus, master have been those unique individuals who have had and have this remarkable ability to transform this need for survival into some form of cults, faiths and religions. And the rest accepted it as they intuitively felt the same need.
Now the question is ŒWhy was such creation necessary for our evolution? What was the nature of the underlying need? What was the survival value of this act? Why did we have to project our goods and evils unto a God-Devil? Why could we not accept the responsibility of our acts as directly as the other animals do? (Do they really? Don¹t they have their own god devil?)
And from here another question, ŒWhat are THE Œhuman characteristics?¹ In other words, in addition to our ability to Œrecord¹ our knowledge, not only within our genes, but also on some lasting outer objects, what is there that distinguishes us from other animals?
(Keeping in mind that whatever answer we find and speculate for such a question would naturally be anthropomorphic.)
For me, the question of ŒWhat are pure human characteristics?¹ began many years ago when passing by a pet shop with my daughter; I suddenly decided to buy a pair of those little beautiful birds, called finch. I personally was shocked by my decision and deed. Me, keeping birds in a cage? Why have I become so cruel? So Œinhuman?¹ But I wanted to do that no matter what my Œhuman¹ aspect would tell me! And in order to soothe my conscience I immediately went to a friend¹s carpentry workshop and built a very large cage for them, a real castle. They reproduced there and gave me the chance to observe a greater number of these birds. To my surprise, I soon realized that they each had their own way of acting, behaving, living. Anthropomorphically, they each had a different Œpersonality!¹ Comparatively, some were Œserious,¹ Œhardworking,¹ Œresponsible¹ Œindividuals¹ and some were the opposite: Œeasy-going¹ Œhedonistic¹ Œirresponsible¹ and Š
On the first day of spring of that year, I freed them to fly into the vast blue sky, although I was told that caged birds can no longer survive if not in the wild, at least in a Œwild¹ city. They would either be hunted by another bird, which was then the most natural death they could have, or get caught by a human bird-hunter andŠThe important thing was to let them go and see whether they remember how to fly or not? A few years before, when I released a few fish that I had bought for the New Year¹s Day, into a pond, they seemed very fearful and apprehensive and did not swim away immediately. They were so Œadamant¹ to grab the opportunity to escape that I started to push them with a stick!
And anybody who has cared for a mammal, such as cats and dogs, knows that they are capable of showing the whole spectrum of human emotions that I call the Œfear-love¹ spectrum (with all our so-called negative emotions arising from fear and the so-called positive ones originating from love). Even the emotional inter-relationship, that is, having relationships with other species also exists between other living organisms. In simple biological term, it is called symbiosis. So what may really be THE Œhuman¹ characteristics?
Could it be ŒAwareness?¹ in the sense of self-consciousness? Could it be that we are the only creatures on this earth, being aware of our mortality, aware of the fact that we are born one day and die one day? And in between we are actually trapped between two Œunknowns,¹ hoping that one day we would come to know these Œunknowns,¹ as we have been unfolding other Œunknowns¹ with the progressive advancement of our sciences and technology. But are they really knowable? Can we for example be able to take a photo with God or Devil one day, in the same way as we now have pictures of Œman on the moon?¹
It seems improbable, as there seems to be a major difference between the Œunknowns of this world¹ and those two other Œunknowns¹ that might even be of one and the same Œnature¹. And in order to distinguish between them let us call the Œunknowns of this world¹ simply as Œunknown¹ and the other(s) as Œunknowable.¹ The Œunknown¹ exists even if we are still Œunaware¹ of its existence. However, there is a high possibility for it to be known because it is of the same material as this world.
The Œunknowable,¹ however, even if it exists, would remain unknowable because it is of another nature of a different form of existence. It does not belong to our world, and we can not recognize and identify it because we do not carry the means of its identification within ourselves. The nearest idea to our conception is the Œnothingness¹ of the philosophers and the idea of Œemptiness¹ in Zen.
With this introduction, let us go back to the real world of our everyday living. Now if we can think of Œawareness¹ or Œself-consciousness¹ as the major quality that differentiate us from the rest of animals, then in the framework of our everyday life, the highest degree of fear is inspired in us in our relation to our awareness of our Œmortality¹ or being Œtrapped between two unknowable.¹ Now as it is the case with any other thing that inspires the most agonizing and intolerable degree of awe in us (such as wars), I mean that very degree that when reached we would then only be capable of Œthinking¹ biologically, here too the final results is that our autonomic nervous system will take over the affairs and will decide and determine whether we should Œfight or fly."
If it decides that we should fly (that is, flee or escape away), what we would actually do is to direct our attention to something else and forget about the fact that Œlife is a transient state of being, and sooner or later we would lose it.¹ And the best and most efficient way of diverting our attention away from this Œfact¹ (i.e. that horrifying Œawareness¹) is to get totally absorbed in our ordinary ever day life through thousands and one different ways that each one of us cling to. In other words, we would choose to live at the plane of our Animal-self which is exactly what most of us do most of the time, with the objective results that we are witnessing in our world. From some perspective, not a very beautiful world to live in, is it?
Or we can decide to fight it. And as the physical form of Œfight¹ is not possible here, (we can not fight with Œunknowable¹ physically), the only thing we can do is to dedicate our life to unfold the nature of this Œawe-inspiring phenomenon¹ as we have done with all the other Œunknowns¹ and turn it into if not some Œknown¹ but at least to some knowable Œunknown.¹ And historically the most common or prevailing attempt has been to turn it into some eternal creator who has breathed his Œspirit¹ into us and we would join his Œkingdom¹ if we observe certain laws and conditions. We may say that all the Religions and all the Schools of Mysticisms and Spiritualism, as much as Scientism, are all different forms of our historical attempt to compensate for that awesome Œawareness of our mortality.¹ And we are witnessing the results of this alternative too. Perhaps we can even claim that so far this too has been another form of living on the plane of our Animal-ness. Why?
Because despite the preaching of cultivation of Œgod-ness¹ Œgoodness¹ Œlove and compassion¹ and avoidance of Œdevil-ness¹ Œevil¹ and Œfear¹ that the overwhelming majority of the above attempts, despite their apparent differences, have in common, they divide us, condition us, separate us, and worse of all, they turn us into an instrument in the hands of the group that have chosen to ignore that very distinguishing human characteristic, ŒAwareness.¹ They make us forget that we are of the same species and with the same existential question. They transform us into the means and the tool for all those individuals driven by ŒThe Will to Power" represented clearly in the overwhelming majority of our politicians, clergies, founders of new cults based on master-disciple foundation.
For American rulers, the governments of Iraq, Iran, Syria and some others are symbols of terrorism. For Iranian, Iraqi andŠ rulers, America is the symbol of ŒDevil.¹ Let us be aware that both sides use us among all the other things that they have in their power, from "Religion" to Œmodern armaments¹ to "mass media" to make their mortal existence last as much as possible even if that means the loss of millions of lives and humiliation of those who were Œdeceived¹ to play their games.
