ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE-
MACHINES TRY TO IMITATE THE MIND
India might have lost the edge to technology, but it leapfrogged into the "cyber world" quite quickly. You go to any small town in India, and dotting its decrepit streets are "cyber-cafes", where for the price of a "masala pan", you can enter, pay your 10 rupees and log on, and enter into the magic world, where "imitating" the human mind (though partially, more by imitation), the cyber world provides you to the first entry into "artificial intelligence". The machine that you are using in the cyber-café has come a long way?.
The first computer mounted in MIT, USA, had 18000 light bulbs whirring to give the binary connection to the stored data. It had to pass through all these thousands of bulbs, relaying on the message of the binary code, which could only give a "yes" or "no" answer. Binary means: two parts, consisting of two parts. Also, (in) Mathematics ? number system that has 2, not 10, as its base?.
Initially clunking along, the world of computer science, advanced in leaps and bounds and has been able to transform the way we work (the writer asked for a typewriter in a Middle Eastern country, and they asked "what is a typewriter"?). This has happened in less than 2 decades. Many of the gadgets that we so casually take for granted are result of a worldwide advance in this science.
5th and 6th GENERATION OF COMPUTERS
We are now at the cusp of these two generations of Information Technology and the scientists are trying to reduce the gap between human thinking and an "artificial intelligence", as the new advance in this science in the 5th and 6th generation is called.
Artificial Intelligence, or AI as it is now called, has managed to make the machine "imitate" man, but the essentials of "semiotics" (giving meaning to the word) is not yet mastered.
Alan Turing, the master craftsman of England, who created the fundamentals for Artificial Intelligence, stated that the machine can only imitate man, but essentially the discerning factor can only come from "consciousness". He did not try to deter his peers from peering into the depth of this new technology, but warned them that hubris should not make their scientific ego bloat, with claims of creating "artificial intelligence" to match a human being's.
While the best of computers still have to work on the binary system, a human intelligence functions with a tertiary (with numerous ramifications) system, which can give meaning (outlined in the study of semiotics) to what it is dealing with. Try as they might, the AI scientists do not have a clue as to how to raise "artificial intelligence" to this level.
METAPHYSICAL LEVEL
This subject of AI was thought out (albeit metaphysically) by Patanjali, the author of the Yoga Sutra: he stated "that a yogi learns to create a new mind (Nirmana Citta) through meditation". Patanjali was the pioneer in the study of "artificial intelligence" or as he called it ? the Nirmana Citta, Yoga sutra 4.4.
