If you like the material you are receiving, you will want to get the whole book by Robert Elias Najemy which can be found as a pdf ebook at http://HolisticHarmony.com/ebooks/index.asp May you enjoy and benefit from it. ********************************** CHAPTER XIV ALL NEGATIVITY RESULTS FROM IDENTIFICATION WITH THE BODY AND MIND When we are experiencing negative emotions, or pain or other negative states, we can be sure that we are identifying with some aspect of our body or mind. When we manage to realize that we are immortal beings beyond the body and mind, we will be free from all negative feelings, which we experience today. In the previous chapter, we discussed how all our emotions were the result of our mistaken perception and understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Here we will continue the analysis and will see how our basic mistake is our identification with the vehicles of expression, that is, the body and the mind, or personality. Because, as immortal spirits, we are as yet inexperienced in expressing ourselves through the medium of matter, we tend to lose awareness of our true spiritual nature when incarnated in physical form. In our amnesia and ignorance of our true nature, we are forced to identify with that part of our being which is most obvious to us - our body. Our identification with our body makes us believe that we are the body, rather than that we have a body, which is a completely different situation. When something belongs to us, we understand that it is something independent from us, that it is there for our use, and that we can exist without it. This is true of our car, our TV, our house and even our children, parents or spouse. We may suffer when we lose any one of these, but we do not believe that we will cease to exist if we lose them. Even if we mistakenly believe so, life teaches us differently. We do lose them in some cases and eventually we realize that we have continued to exist, and that we can even smile and enjoy life again, if we allow ourselves to. Our basic mistake is believing that we are the body rather than understanding that our body is simply a vehicle, which is given to us for the purpose of living a temporary life on earth, so that we may continue with our process of evolution. Thus we should not speak about our soul. We are not bodies that have souls. We are souls that have bodies. We can speak of our bodies and minds because they belong to us. The same is true of the mind and personality. We are not minds, or personalities, nor are we personalities that have souls. We are immortal souls that have the temporary use of these personalities, for the purpose of development and expression on earth of the latent spiritual powers and abilities, which lie within our soul nature. We are not personalities. We have personalities, we own personalities. When we make this distinction, our lives will be happier, freer and more full of creativity and contentment. Thus we may call the body, mind and personality, vehicles or instruments of the soul. All our problems in life are the result of our identification with, and our mistaken belief that we are these vehicles. We have used the following diagram in previous chapters, but let us use it again to facilitate our understanding of our relationship with our vehicles. The spirit is one with God. It is pure, immortal consciousness without any modifications whatsoever. For `some reasonı it projects itself into the spiritual, astral, mental and physical worlds, through the various vehicles or bodies. We have already discussed the nature of, and purpose and function of, each of these bodies in the earlier chapters. The consciousness of the Spirit, as it passes through each of these vehicles (which themselves are manifestations of this one consciousness) grows more and more material. Let us take a moment here, for it is not easy to imagine. Imagine that this consciousness is like a pure white light. As it projects itself towards the earth, imagine that at each level, as it descends, the light itself manifests as a filter of slightly greater density. The light creates a filter through which it itself continues to flow, now somewhat less pure and bright. As it approaches an even more earthly level, it creates still another filter, this one even more dense, and in passing through it towards the next level, the vibration and purity of the light is even lower. In this way, this pure unlimited consciousness projects itself as the five vehicles through which it expresses itself, and in passing through them, becomes more and more limited in its perception and expression. Thus, as the pure consciousness, which we really are, passes through the causal body, the higher intellect, and eventually through the mind, energy body and physical body, it gets more and more lost in the identification with the vehicles, losing the awareness of its true, unlimited and blissful reality. The purpose of life is to free ourselves from the identification with these vehicles and to experience once again our real immortal, free, blissful nature. The vehicles themselves have no power, no source of security or happiness of their own. They learn to depend on the external world for their security, affirmation and contentment. Can a car drive by itself? Can a car protect itself? Is the driver of the car the same as the car? The car is a vehicle which is a temporary possession for the use of the owner. The body is a temporary vehicle for the soulıs use. ELECTRICITY Another good example is electricity. The same electricity flows through many light bulbs. Some have the ability to express a great amount of light and others less (200 w, l00 w, 75 w, 40 w, 25 w etc.) Some express colored light. Many bulbs have different shapes. Some bulbs last for many years and others for a few days. All these bulbs are various vehicles of expression for the one electricity that is flowing in all the houses. The electricity is the one universal spirit, and the various bulbs are the various types of bodies and minds, through which that one universal spirit is expressing itself. The limitation of expression is not in the electricity or the spirit, but in the bulbs. We, as `evolving bulbsı, have the ability to increase our ability to express ever greater quantities of our spiritual energy through our bodies and minds. Take the example of the cassette recorder. There are many qualities of cassette recorders. Their recording and playing power and quality can vary greatly. They exist in a wide variety of appearances. There are expensive and inexpensive ones, and they come in various colors and shapes, yet there is one and the same electricity flowing through all of them. Each cassette player is like the body and personality of each person. The cassette that is in each player is his mind, and what is written on the tape is his belief conditioning. Whatever was recorded on that tape, when he was a young child, continues to play all his life, unless he starts to take a look at it, and erase his old beliefs and living habits, and starts to record new concepts about himself and his relationship with the world. We are the electricity. We are not the many vehicles through which it is flowing. It is, however, as if the electricity is identifying with the type of tape player it is expressing itself through. Imagine electricity feeling self-conscious about flowing through an inexpensive tape recorder, or through a black one rather than a white or blue one. Imagine the electricity getting upset about what someone else thinks about the tape recorder through which itıs flowing. Imagine the electricity being disturbed by the type of cassette that is being used, or the contents of the cassettes. Imagine the electricity fearing for its life, because the tape recorder is about to, or has already broken down and does not work any more. Imagine the electricity feeling limited by what is being expressed on one particular cassette player, rather than realizing its universal nature, and the fact that it can express itself through any other cassette player, and that it actually is the one universal electricity, which is expressing itself through all tape recorders everywhere, and not only tape recorders, but refrigerators, heaters, fans, stoves, vacuum cleaners, radios, TVs and a wide variety of other `speciesı of beings also. Gradually as we evolve spiritually, we will identify more and more with the spirit, and less and less with the body, mind and the contents of our minds as we do today. It is our responsibility to cultivate, develop and harmonize all these vehicles of expression, so that they may express all the more clearly, and without personal distortion, the beauty and purity and love of our true spiritual nature. Believing, however, that we are the vehicles is an obstacle to their proper development. It leads to fear, defensiveness, negative thoughts and negative behavior. Identification leads to attachment, competition, pride, hurt and in general, a concentration on the superficial and external aspects of life. We tend to live according to what we believe we must do, in order to have the approval of others, and also become slaves to every momentary need of the body and mind. We, in such cases, are not free human beings, but rather slaves to the programming of our vehicles. Identifying with our true universal nature liberates us from all sense of separateness. There are no Japanese, American, German or Greek electrons. All electrons all over the world are one and the same. In the same way there are no German, Greek or Japanese spirits. Neither are there Christian, Buddhist or Moslem spirits. Neither are there male or female spirits. There is one Universal Omnipresent Spirit who is expressing itself as all the beings, objects and events that we are experiencing. GETTING FREE Our goal is to free ourselves from our identification with our vehicles so as to experience our universal self. There are various steps to this process. 1. We will need to reprogram the contents of our cassette. We will have to erase the old programmings and beliefs, which are the function of our early childhood years and past lives, and record the new spiritual truths, which we are learning and experiencing into our mind through affirmations, meditation, prayer, reading, reflection and contact with those who have spiritual tendencies or knowledge. 2. We will have to realize that the ego is a non-entity that can be programmed in any way we choose. There are, of course, tendencies from past experiences which must be respected and worked with and occasionally circumvent, but that we are not limited by what our ego appears to be at present. 3. We will need to realize that our true self is beyond the body and the mind and that we existed, exist now, and will always exist independent of the existence of the body or mind. 4. Our true self is unaffected by the various events which occur to the body and the mind. One who is well established in this belief does not fear about his security or appearance to others. He is beyond worry about the criticism of others. He follows his own inner voice and conscience. He does not suffer when the body is harmed or the personality is hurt or depressed. He observes objectively the various states through which they pass. He acts in order to protect them, without worry of getting involved in the melodrama of it all, as most of us do. 5.Gradually we must realize that our true self is God that we are the one universal consciousness, which is expressing itself through all that we see. This is the highest realization that will come through our spiritual effort and Divine Grace. All of our negative emotions are based on our identification with the vehicles through which we are expressing ourselves. This identification eventually disturbs and ruins our relationship with ourselves and with others, and is a great obstacle to our spiritual growth, not to mention our health. TECHNIQUE The following technique will be useful in getting free from this vicious circle of identification and suffering. Sit with your eyes closed (spine straight if you can) and search in your mind for the various negative emotions which you have been feeling recently or in the past. Look at all of them, large, medium and small. If positive emotions also come to mind, do not reject them. Acknowledge them and continue letting the various emotions pass through your awareness. After becoming conscious of each emotion, repeat the phrase; "I FEEL THIS EMOTION OF________ WHEN MY CONSCIOUSNESS IS IDENTIFYING WITH ITS VEHICLES". As each emotion appears in your mind, repeat this phrase and try to understand it. Do not avoid using it on positive emotions if they come to mind. Do not concentrate on specific emotions more than others. Apply it to weak as well as strong emotions. Do this for about three minutes, four or five times a day. Do it extra times when you are feeling strong negative emotions. When you are aware of what the specific emotion is, you can express the phrase directly for that emotion, such as, "I FEEL HURT WHEN I AM IDENTIFYING WITH MY VEHICLES. I FEEL FEAR WHEN I AM IDENTIFYING WITH MY VEHICLES". If expressing this in some other way is more suitable, then feel free to create your own phrase which helps you free yourself from the control which these negative emotions have on you. One word about the emotion of love; it cannot really be considered as an emotion when in its highest form. The various less-than-universal forms of love are naturally emotions based on the identification with vehicles that have a certain attraction between them. Universal love, however, is the absence of identification with our specific vehicle and the identification with all vehicles and thus the feeling of unity with all. I suggest that you perform this technique four or five times a day (extra times when having problems) for about a week before going on to the next chapter.
