Today my life is full of meaningful activities that bring me joy and satisfaction. What happened between 1970 and today -20 years later? My beliefs and perceptions of myself and the world around me changed. In 1970 I was a chemical engineer working in an office at a large chemical industrial plant. The work was interesting when there were problems to solve, but I could see no relationship between what I was doing and life itself. My work had no meaning for me. My life itself had no meaning for me. The crisis became so severe that I decided to hand in my resignation and give myself a year to see if I could find any reason to continue living. Watching the evening news daily, my mind became filled with the insane senselessness of our world, lacking in any reason or logic. Everywhere there was hypocrisy, lying, suffering, violence, war, hatred - everything that no one wanted. If life was meant for living 60, 80, 100 years of this insanity, only to die with no future continuation, then I was not interested. I preferred to die then, at the age of 21, rather than live such a meaningless life just for the sake of whatever small pleasures I might be able to find, unless, of course, there was some reason for the world being as it is, or that there was some purpose to this life. My first realization was that I was not alone in my feelings about life¹s meaninglessness. This inability of people to find a deeper purpose in life had led to all that we see around us, alcoholism, drug addiction, the need for tranquilizers, anxiety, worry, fear, hurt, bitterness, anger, hatred, aggression, violence, war, injustice, poverty, famine, illness, unhappiness, suffering of all kinds and the great disillusionment of the youth and their subsequent rejection of society, and all its consequences. Our vision of a meaningless world leads us to live meaningless lives, in which we do not really live in harmony with our best interests. Our mistaken perception of the world does not allow us to discover the inherent reasons for what we see around us, and what our role is here on earth. THE WORLD WE SEE We see a world in which there is injustice. We cry in bitterness for what injustices have been done to us. In reality, however, what is happening to us is the result of the law of cause and effect, in which we are receiving the results of our previous thoughts, words and actions. The concept that human suffering is the result of past transgressions of universal law is repeated often in the Bible. Jesus has healed by saying "your sins are forgiven", which makes a clear connection between present human suffering and past egotistical actions. Thus our perception of events is not accurate. The following example may help. Imagine that we own a car with which we do some damage and are called to court. Between the time we did that damage and the court case, our car becomes destroyed and we appear in court as the owners of a new car. When the accusations are made concerning the damage done, we protest that injustice is being done, because we do not own such a car, and do not remember having owned such a car. It is true that we do not remember, but the fact is that we have lived many lives, in which we have used many bodies in the process of our evolution. In this life we are receiving the results of those previous actions, which were made with those previous bodies. This does not mean that we must sit back and allow people to do whatever they like to us. We must make every effort to protect justice, but must always accept the results of our efforts as just. The understanding of the law of cause and effect gradually liberates us from fear, suffering, hurt, bitterness, anxiety and jealousy, for we realize that everything that is happening to us is the result of our own actions and beliefs, and that nothing will ever happen that is not for the good of our evolution. We will then start to pay much more attention to what we can learn from our experiences and will want to participate more consciously in our process of evolution. Now we see death, when in reality there are only souls, which are temporarily entering into, and then leaving, physical bodies, in order to learn certain lessons and continue their growth here on earth. When we begin to see clearly, we realize that there is no such thing as death and that life is eternal. Sometimes it expresses itself through the physical body and at other times it is not focused on the physical plane. We will gradually realize that we are souls here for further schooling, and start to play a more conscious role in our own and others¹ growth process. We see separateness where there is actually oneness. We see different bodies, ignoring that there is one spirit, which is giving life to all these different bodies and personalities. We strive for love and unity in various material ways, failing to realize that these bodies and personalities can never be totally united, and that only by coming into contact with our inner self, which is already one with the others, will we be able to experience the lasting and fulfilling unity which we desire. We see ourselves as vulnerable and helpless in a dangerous world full of pitfalls from which we must protect ourselves. That causes us to close our hearts to others, and close ourselves into a lonely existence, in which we do not dare to reach out to others. We live in fear of whatever dangerous situations may be around the bend of the river of life. We lack the faith that we have the power to overcome them. As our vision becomes more clear, we will realize that the river of life loves us and wants to carry us to the sea of union with the divine. We need only have faith in the river, the flow of events, and our own ability to face and overcome any obstacles. We will have faith in the divine plan, which brings to us only the experiences which we need for growth at every stage of our evolution, and never gives us experiences that we do not have the power to face and use effectively as learning situations. We have the free will to see things that way or not. We can become afraid and complain about our fate, or take our lives in our hands and use the methods, which are available, for developing greater inner strength and clarity of mind. PLATO¹S CAVE We are like the people in Plato¹s cave who see the various shadows on the wall of the cave created by a fire behind them. The objects, passing between the light of the fire and their backs, create on the wall in front of them a series of moving shadows. Not having seen any other reality, they consider these shadows to be the totality of reality and develop a whole science of shadows, in which they analyze the hows and the whys of the comings and goings of these shadows. They base their whole lives on the phenomena of shadows, which are simply the random movement of workers, coming and going to work, with their tools over their shoulders. They know no other reality. Eventually, one of the men chained in the cave gets free and starts to climb up to the opening of the cave. At first he is painfully blinded by the light of the sun, but gradually his eyes recover and he begins to perceive the reality of the sun and all the beauty of nature, which he has never witnessed before. Out of enthusiasm and joy he rushes back into the cave to announce to all his friends that, what they have been seeing all these years, is an illusion and a very limited and unpleasant reality, in comparison to the real one, but they not only do not want to hear these `blasphemies¹, but persecute him as well. This is what we have done with most of the spiritual beings, who have come to explain to us that we are not seeing things as they really are, and that life is much grander, yet more simple, than we perceive it to be; that we are much more powerful and safe than we ever imagined. They tell us that we are immortal beings; that there is a Divine Universal Consciousness, which watches over us and protects us; that our real security is found in love and unity and not in hoarding and competition. We cannot believe them because we have not yet experienced the truth that they describe to us. But we will never experience it, if we do not start gradually changing our belief systems and liberating our minds from their mechanical thought patterns, through self-analysis, prayer, meditation and the study of spiritual truths. THE EXPERIENCE OF UNITY What might that experience of the truth be like at the various levels of our being? For each it will be different, but perhaps there are some general common factors. On the physical level, we will begin to feel a connection with those around us. We will be interested in how they are, and will desire for them to be well and happy, wanting to be of use to them if we can. We may get involved in various selfless service projects, in an attempt to better the quality of the lives of those around us. We will feel a need to share what we have, so that all may benefit from what life has blessed us with. We will find meaning in playing our role in which we may bring greater harmony to ourselves and to the society around us. On the energy level, we will feel greater energy and vitality, harmony and health. We will not be in conflict with our surroundings, and thus our vital energies will be saved and will protect our bodies from any dangerous substances, or microbes, in our environment. Every small event will be a source of pleasure, as small things suddenly seem to be miracles. The miracle of life begins to reveal itself to us and we become like little children enjoying each experience as new and unique. On the emotional level, we start to feel more and more compassion and love towards those around us. We seldom have negative emotions, and are filled with the joy of being with so many brothers and sisters, as our sense of family starts to expand to include all beings everywhere. We feel very safe, because we are always with `our own¹, and therefore, not in danger. A sense of gratitude for all that we have and for the beauty of life starts to fill our hearts, and we frequently whisper to ourselves, "thank you, thank you for all this." On the mental level we experience peace, contentment, harmony and creativity. The mind now becomes an instrument for creation, and the expression of the divine potential that is within us. There is a peaceful creative flow that brings joy to our environment and to ourselves. Life becomes a game; a game of growth and creation. We take ourselves less seriously. We definitely have a goal in life and are very productive, but we realize that we are in a process of evolution and that life on earth is temporary. We do the best we can, without anxiety and worry about the results. We no longer get caught up in senseless arguments about who is right or what system is the best. We realize that there is a great variety of systems and experiences for the various souls to pass through. We gain tolerance and understanding, and can accept people even though they have completely different beliefs from our own. We are at peace and feel a oneness with all beings. There is not much we can say about the spiritual level, for this level is beyond time and space. Our minds and language work in the limited sphere of time and space. We are told, by those who have progressed to this level, that we will experience a type of blissful unity with all and everything. We might imagine the blissful orgasm of sexual union magnified a million times through union with all beings and things. Christ spoke from this level of consciousness when he stated that He is in us and that we are in Him. He was then identifying with the universal consciousness that is in and around all beings. This state might be called heaven, paradise, samadhi, nirvana, or enlightenment, whatever you like. It is the eventual goal, desire, or we might say, destination of every soul, regardless of whether he knows it at this point in his evolution or not. We are like rivers destined to return to and merge with the sea. We can accelerate the process of unification, inwardly and outwardly, through various techniques mentioned over and over in this book, such as proper diet, physical exercise, breathing techniques, deep relation, self-analysis, positive thought projection, meditation, prayer, chanting, selfless service to others and the study of spiritual truths. May you have a pleasant journey. May you realize your True Self. May you live in love and peace.
