HOW WE CAN MASTER OUR EMOTIONAL NATURE

Following are some techniques and concepts that may help us deal with and channel our emotional energies. Of course, techniques are of no use sitting in our minds. They must be put into practice. Benefit will come from regular application of those that appeal most to each of us.

Techniques for mastering emotions can be divided into five categories:

1. Those that help express or release our negative energy in ways that do not harm others.

2. Those that relax and release the tensions on an inner level.

3. Those that build our energy level so that we have greater positive energy to deal with people and events.

4. Those that transform our emotional tension through understanding and reprogramming of subconscious conditioning.

5. Those which allow us to transcend our emotional nature.

Here we will list some of those techniques available. At the end of each chapter we have been and will be presenting you with a technique to study and perhaps employ. The idea here is that during the days you will be reading each chapter, you will have some time to absorb and try out the technique described before that chapter. Then you can regularly employ those techniques that suit you most.

A word to those who have an aversion to techniques and "recipes" as a way of transformation. Be careful that this is not a game played by your ego defenses to avoid painful changes. It is true that the final transformation is made without techniques or concepts. However, for most of us, such aids are not only useful but also indispensable, for success in the initial stages of this process.

These techniques may seem mechanical and non-spontaneous the first few times we employ them. But the reality is that, at the present, the ways in which we think, speak and act are equally mechanical. We are like robots reacting according to our subjective programming. Thus, by using such techniques, we "fight fire with fire" or "remove a thorn with a thorn". We use the programming possibilities of the mind to replace alienating, suffering-causing programs with unifying, happiness-producing ones.

WE MUST ACCEPT WHAT WE WANT TO CHANGE

There is one basic key that we will need regardless of which techniques we decide to use. That is that, in order to overcome or transform any emotion, we must first accept it. Not accepting that we have a particular emotion, desire or fear, is a major obstacle towards transforming or changing it. We cannot change something that we deny exists.

Thus, the first step towards any change or transformation is to accept ourselves exactly as we are with all of our weaknesses, fears, attachments and desires. We need to first feel that we are worthy of love and acceptance exactly as we are. Whatever we reject in ourselves or others will resist change. Also, some of us seek self-improvement with the idea that we will become more lovable to the Divine. I would suspect that in Godąs eyes we are all always lovable. Better to avoid making these transformations in an attempt to make ourselves "good", or "better" than the others, or because we wish to become more lovable.

What is true is that we will be freer, happier, and truer to our own inner nature, liberated from mechanical emotional reactions, which destroy our health, happiness and freedom as souls in the process of evolution.
