Self Knowledge Exercises
K23 -Obstacles to getting well
Print

We want to search for any possible parts of our being which are, for any reason, resisting positive changes in our lives.

Look deeply into your self before answering any questions, and also check to see how your inner child might answer.

1. Is there perhaps a part of your being which:

a. Doubts your ability to succeed in this effort for change or betterment?

(that perhaps you do not have the strength or ability)

What exactly does this part of your self believe?

b. Doubts whether or not you have the right to have or be something better?

Perhaps that you do not deserve it?

Or that, because of feelings of guilt, that you should not have or be something beautiful?

Or perhaps that someone else will feel badly if you change or if you become stronger and independent or self sufficient?

What exactly does that part of you believe?

2. Is there a part of you which fears this change which you are seeking?

a. Perhaps that part of you fears that you will lose the others' attention, love, care, protection, or support?

Or perhaps that you will lose some forms of freedom or some pleasures?

b. Does it perhaps fear that if you feel better that you will need to take responsibility for your life.

Does it perhaps fear being totally responsible for your life?

c. Does it fear that you will lose any excuses for not being happy, healthy or successful?

d. Does it fear that you will lose your freedom or your self worth?

3. Is there a part of you which prefers not to change because in this way :

a. You can keep others feeling responsible for your reality.?

b. You can make them feel guilty?

c. You can punish them?

4. Is there a part of you which perhaps does not want this change for the better:

a. Because others want the same change from you, and you do not want to give them the satisfaction ?

b. Because you have other needs which conflict with your need for self improvement such as a need to to eat sweets or smoke, or drink heavily ?

Or perhaps you have conflict in between your need for relationship and your need for freedom?

5. In relationship to whatever betterment you seek:

a. What messages or examples do you have about that in your past and present?

b. Did you receive what you are now seeking when you were a child?

c. Did you parents have what you are seeking to create?

from each other ?

from others ?

from life ?

6. Based on your analysis, what do you believe might be the inner obstacles towards your self improvement and or inner strength?

7. What do you want to do about that ?

8. If you at this moment had absolute self confidence and self acceptance:

a. What would you do which until now you hesitate to do?

b. What would you cease doing because you do it presently only because you lack self confidence and or self acceptance ?

9. What are you going to do?
